Are Gulf Coast Fisheries Going Under Water

These industtry rely on the Gul's respources and unique enviromental advantages and competition is fierce to control policy how they are used.  Predominantly made up of small busineses, the Fin and Shrimp anglers are at a major disadvantage because they do not have the legal and political resources to compete. The Gulf coast fisheries are an important producer in shrimp, oysters and red snapper among other commercial fish species.  Although fishing is one of the largest sectors of the Gulf of Mexico’s economy, at less then $1 billion revenue per year; it is dwarfed by the $150 billion off-shore Oil and the $20 billion tourism industries. Commercial and sport fishing are critical components of the local and national economies because its product is always in demand and relied on by the tourism and hospitality at the national level.

Spanning the Yucatan peninsula in to the tip of Florida, the Gulf of Mexico covers 11 states from US and Mexico. This vast area is includes many delicate ecosystems. Many are unique on the planet as the Gulf seabed is a maze of reefs that provide fishing grounds protected from currents and a seabed perforated with fresh water sources that support one of the most diverse habitats of life on the planet. The reefs of the gulf are teeming with birds, fish and mammals that compete each other and with us for the Gulf's resources.
